Tarmac Driveways in Croxley Green

Every homeowner has a picture in their head of the perfect lawn. Lush, green, springy underfoot. Then reality kicks in—the bald patches, the muddy corners after a wet week, the mower that refuses to start every single spring. If you’ve ever stood at your back door wondering whether real grass is worth all the hassle, you’re not alone.

This is a fair, no-nonsense comparison of artificial grass vs real grass. No one-sided sales pitch, just the pros, cons and practical bits you actually need to weigh up. And yes, we install artificial lawns here at Stone Art UK, so if you’d like a hand deciding what suits your garden, we’re always happy to chat.

The quick answer (for people already hovering over “buy now”)

Short on time? Here’s the gist:

• Artificial grass usually wins if you’re time-poor, have kids or dogs churning up the lawn, deal with heavy shade, or you’re tired of a muddy garden you can’t use for half the year.
• Real grass usually wins if you genuinely enjoy gardening, you want maximum biodiversity, or you already have a healthy, well-draining lawn you don’t mind maintaining.

Rule of thumb: if your garden takes more punishment than you have time to repair, artificial grass tends to make sense. If mowing on a sunny Sunday is your idea of a good time, stick with the real thing.

How real grass and artificial grass actually compare

Here’s a side-by-side look before we dig into the detail:

The table tells the headline story, but the nuance matters—so let’s unpack it.

Real grass: the pros, the cons, and the “hidden jobs”

There’s a lot to love about a natural lawn. It feels wonderful underfoot, it stays cool in summer, and a healthy lawn supports insects, worms and all the little critters that keep a garden ticking along.

But real grass comes with a to-do list that never really ends. Mowing, edging, feeding, reseeding, moss control, aerating, watering during dry spells—it adds up. And in the UK, our climate throws a few extra spanners in the works. Heavy London clay soil, common across northwest London, drains slowly and compacts easily. Shaded gardens leave grass thin and patchy. And if you’ve got a dog, you’ll know all about those yellow wee patches that appear overnight.

If you’re keen to keep your natural lawn, a few quick wins genuinely help:

• Aerate in autumn to relieve compaction, especially on clay.
• Overseed bare patches and top-dress with a light layer of compost.
• Raise your mowing height in summer to help the grass hold moisture.
• Scarify to clear moss and thatch that choke healthy growth.

Do all that consistently, and a real lawn can look brilliant. The key word is “consistently.”

Artificial grass: what you gain (and what you need to be realistic about)

Artificial grass has come a long way from the plasticky stuff you might remember. Modern turf looks and feels convincingly natural, and the artificial grass benefits are hard to ignore.

You get a tidy, green space every day of the year. No more mud, no more bare patches, and no more losing your weekends to lawn care. For families and pet owners especially, a garden that stays usable through a soggy British winter is a genuine game-changer.

That said, we believe in being straight with people. Artificial grass isn’t magic:

• It costs more upfront than laying turf or seed.
• It needs proper base preparation. This is the big one—more on that later.
• It can get warm in a heatwave. A quick spray with the hose cools it right down.
• It still needs occasional attention. Think brushing the pile and clearing leaves.

Low maintenance? Absolutely. Maintenance-free? Not quite. Anyone who promises you that is fibbing.

Costs: what you’ll pay upfront vs what you’ll save over time

Let’s talk money, with the honest caveat that every garden is different. Costs vary depending on size, access, ground conditions and the quality of turf you choose.

Real grass looks cheap at first. Laying natural turf runs roughly £15–£25 per square metre. But the ongoing costs sneak up: professional mowing can run £300–£600 a year, lawn treatments another £200–£400, plus water in dry spells. Over 15 years, natural lawn upkeep can quietly climb into the thousands.

Artificial grass asks for more upfront. Quality turf itself sits around £20–£45 per square metre, and a full professional installation in the London area typically lands between £90 and £150 per square metre once you factor in groundwork, sub-base and labour. The trade-off? Maintenance over 15 years is often just a few hundred pounds.

The smartest way to think about it is cost per year across the lifespan, rather than the sticker price on day one. We can put together a proper quote based on your garden’s size, access and how you actually use the space—no guesswork.

Pets, kids, and heavy use: which lawn survives real life?

This is where things get interesting, because real life is messy.

If you’ve got a dog, pet friendly artificial grass is worth a serious look. There’s no digging, no muddy paw prints trailing through the kitchen, and no dead patches from wee. With good drainage and a quick rinse now and then, smell simply isn’t the issue people fear. Choose a quality product with an odour-neutralising infill and you’re sorted.

For children, artificial grass gives you a soft, cushioned, mess-free surface that stays put through every game of football and every muddy scramble. There are no pesticides or fertilisers involved either, which is reassuring when little ones are rolling around on it. Just make sure it’s installed by someone who knows their stuff, so edges are secure and there’s nothing to trip over.

Heavy footfall is exactly where natural grass tends to wave the white flag. A well-installed artificial lawn shrugs it off.

Maintenance: “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance”

If you’re hunting for low maintenance garden ideas, here’s the honest comparison.

Real grass jobs:

• Mowing every week or two in the growing season
• Edging and strimming
• Feeding, weeding and moss control
• Reseeding bare patches
• Watering in dry weather
• Seasonal aeration and scarifying

Artificial grass routine:

• Clear leaves and debris with a brush or leaf blower
• Rinse occasionally to keep it fresh
• Brush the pile to keep it upright
• Check the edges now and then

One list eats your weekends; the other takes minutes. For anyone after easy care garden solutions, the maths speaks for itself.

When artificial grass is 100% worth it (and when it isn’t)

It’s worth it when:

• Your lawn is a permanent mud pit or full of bare patches
• You’ve got kids, dogs or both giving it a daily hammering
• Your garden is shaded and grass simply won’t grow
• You want a tidy, green space without the upkeep

It’s probably not worth it when:

• You genuinely enjoy lawn care and find it relaxing
• Biodiversity in that spot is a priority for you
• You already have a healthy, well-draining lawn and don’t mind the maintenance

There’s no shame in loving your mower. But if your garden is fighting a losing battle, artificial grass ends the war.

Artificial grass installation: why the groundwork matters more than people think

Here’s the bit that gets overlooked far too often. The turf itself is only half the job—the groundwork underneath is what separates a beautiful lawn from a bumpy, puddle-prone one.

Proper installation means excavating, laying and compacting a solid sub-base, getting the levels spot on, adding a weed membrane, fitting secure edging and making sure water drains away freely. Skip these steps—or “just roll it out over the soil”—and you’ll be looking at lumps, sinkage and standing water within a season.

Drainage is especially important on our local clay soils, which don’t shift water easily on their own. Get the base right and quality artificial grass drains beautifully, even after the sort of downpour we’re all too familiar with.

If you’re considering artificial grass installation in Pinner or nearby, we’re happy to talk through the prep work, drainage and options before you commit to anything. Groundwork is where our team really earns its keep.

Our honest take at Stone Art UK

We won’t pretend one choice fits everyone, because it doesn’t. Some gardens are crying out for artificial grass; others are perfectly happy as they are.

What we can do is help you weigh it up honestly, based on how you use your garden, your budget and what you’re realistically expecting. And here’s a tip worth knowing: sometimes the best result isn’t grass at all, but a clever mix. Pairing an artificial lawn with a well-placed patio or path can cut down muddy zones even further and give you a cleaner, lower-maintenance garden overall.

Frequently asked questions

Is artificial grass cheaper than real grass in the long run?
Often, yes. The upfront cost is higher, but with minimal ongoing maintenance, artificial grass can work out cheaper over its lifespan—especially compared to years of mowing, feeding and watering.

Does artificial grass smell if you have dogs?
Not if it’s installed properly. Good drainage plus the occasional rinse keeps things fresh. Choosing turf with an odour-neutralising infill helps even more.

Is artificial grass safe for children?
Yes. Quality artificial grass is non-toxic, soft and free from the pesticides and fertilisers a natural lawn often needs. Proper installation keeps the edges secure and trip-free.

Can weeds grow through artificial grass?
Rarely, when it’s laid correctly. A weed membrane beneath the turf blocks most growth, though the odd windblown seed on top is easily brushed away.

Does artificial grass drain properly in heavy rain?
When installed with the right sub-base, yes—it drains quickly and won’t waterlog. This is exactly why groundwork matters so much, particularly on clay soil.

How long does artificial grass last?
Typically 8–15 years, and premium products can last 20 years or more. Lifespan depends on the quality of the turf and how well it’s installed.

Will artificial grass fade in the sun?
Good-quality turf is UV-stabilised, so it holds its colour for years rather than fading or going patchy.

Can you lay artificial grass on existing lawn or soil?
It’s not recommended. Laying it straight onto soil leads to bumps, sinkage and poor drainage. A properly prepared sub-base is essential for a lasting finish.

Does artificial grass get hot in summer?
It can warm up in a proper heatwave, but it won’t cause burns. A quick spray with the hose cools it down in seconds.

What’s the best option for a shaded garden?
Artificial grass, almost every time. Real grass struggles without sunlight, whereas artificial turf stays green and healthy in the shadiest corners.
