Fencing in Croxley Green

There’s no single “best” garden fence for everyone. Closeboard (feather edge) fencing is generally the top all-rounder for privacy and security, while slatted or picket styles win on kerb appeal. The right choice depends on your priorities, your property, and your budget—so pick the fence that solves your problem, not the internet’s.

Picture the scene. Your new neighbours have built a rather lovely raised deck, and now they’ve got a front-row seat to your Sunday morning coffee. Or maybe your dog has discovered a wobbly panel and treats it like a personal doggy door. Perhaps your fence has simply seen better days and is starting to lean like it’s had one too many.

Sound familiar? Then you’re probably weighing up a new fence—and quickly realising there are far more options than you bargained for.

The good news is we’ve done the head-scratching for you. In this guide, we’ll compare the main fencing types, weigh up the pros and cons, touch on fence installation cost, and help you figure out what actually suits your garden. Whether privacy, security or good looks matters most, there’s a smart choice waiting for you.

Start with the basics: what do you need your fence to do?

Before picking a style, decide what job your fence needs to do first—privacy, security, kerb appeal or budget—because you can rarely max out all four at once.

Most people want a bit of everything—privacy, security, and something that looks the part. The trouble is, you can’t always max out all three (and stay on budget). A tall, solid fence gives brilliant privacy but might feel a bit like a prison wall out front. A pretty picket fence looks charming but won’t stop much of anything.

A few things worth thinking about early on:

• Height and sightlines: How much do you actually need to block?
• Gaps: Solid panels give full privacy; slatted or picket styles let light (and eyes) through.
• Wind exposure: Solid fences catch the wind like a sail. Semi-permeable styles handle gusts better.
• Ground conditions: Sloping gardens often suit fencing built on-site rather than pre-made panels.

Get these sorted first, and every decision afterwards becomes much easier.

Best garden fencing for privacy

The best garden fencing for privacy in the UK is closeboard (feather edge), because its overlapping vertical boards leave no gaps. Venetian slats with tight spacing and solid panels with trellis toppers are strong alternatives.

If keeping nosy neighbours (and that raised deck) at bay is your top priority, here are the privacy fencing ideas worth considering.

Closeboard (feather edge)

is the gold standard for privacy. Overlapping vertical boards create a solid, gap-free barrier with no peeking-through. It’s tough, long-lasting—often 15 to 20 years with proper care—and looks smart to boot.

Overlap (lap) panels

are the budget-friendly favourite and the most common fence in UK gardens. They give decent privacy at a standard 6ft height for a lower upfront cost. The trade-off? A lighter frame and shorter lifespan, so they’re more likely to suffer in a big storm.

Venetian (slatted) fencing

offers a modern look with privacy that still lets some light and air through. Here’s the catch a lot of people miss: the angle and spacing of the slats decide how much your neighbours can see. Get it wrong, and you’ve paid for a fence that leaves you rather exposed.

Trellis toppers

are a clever trick. Adding trellis to the top of a solid fence boosts height and privacy without making the garden feel boxed in—just keep the total height within legal limits.

One last tip: hedging and climbers make lovely privacy boosters, but treat them as an addition, not a substitute. Plants don’t stop a determined intruder.

Best garden fencing for security

The most secure garden fencing is solid, tall closeboard with timber posts, inward-facing rails and a locked, tight-fitting gate. The aim is to make your boundary harder to climb, not easier.

Solid, taller fencing (up to the usual 2m limit for rear gardens) is a strong start. But there’s a detail that catches loads of people out: horizontal rails. If the supporting rails face outwards, you’ve essentially built a ladder for anyone who fancies a climb. Keep those rails facing into your garden.

Your post choice matters too. Concrete posts resist rot and last for years, but slotted panels can be lifted straight out of them. Timber posts let panels be screwed firmly into the frame, which makes them far harder to shift—better for security-minded gardens.

And then there’s the bit everyone forgets: the gate. A brilliant fence with a flimsy gate and a rusty bolt is like a bank vault with the door left open. Side passages are a classic weak point. Fit a proper lock, make sure the gate sits tight against the fence line, and you’ve closed off the easiest way in.

For an extra layer, thorny plants like pyracantha or holly along the boundary make a surprisingly effective—and rather pretty—natural deterrent.

Best garden fencing for kerb appeal

For kerb appeal, the best garden fencing matches your home’s style—clean horizontal slats for modern properties, or traditional overlap, closeboard or picket panels for older homes. A neat, consistent finish matters as much as the style itself.

The golden rule is to match the fence to the house. Sleek horizontal slats suit modern, boxy homes beautifully, while traditional overlap or closeboard panels feel right at home with older, characterful properties. A picket fence out front adds instant charm to a cottage or semi.

Finish makes a huge difference too. A consistent stain or paint colour pulls the whole boundary together, and it’s worth keeping every run the same shade so it doesn’t look patchy.

Here’s the honest truth from years on the tools, though: the real “secret sauce” is the installation. Straight runs, level posts, neat capping and tidy joints separate a fence that looks premium from one that looks like a weekend DIY job gone sideways. A gorgeous panel fitted badly still looks… well, bad.

Which garden fence is best? A quick comparison

At a glance, here’s how the most popular fence types stack up against the priorities that matter most:

Still not sure? Here’s a quick chooser:

• Privacy is #1 → Closeboard or a solid panel with a trellis topper.
• Security is #1 → Closeboard with timber posts, plus a properly locked gate.
• Kerb appeal is #1 → Venetian slats for modern homes, or picket for traditional frontages.
• You want a balanced all-rounder → Closeboard ticks the most boxes for the widest range of gardens.

Fence installation cost in the UK: what affects the price?

Fence installation cost in the UK averages around £71 per metre including materials and labour, according to FenceInstallers.co.uk (2026), though standard runs can start nearer £40 per metre and premium composite or metal styles climb to £110–£200 per metre.

Everyone wants a number, but the real figure genuinely varies from job to job. What pushes the price up or down?

• Length and height of the run
• Materials—lap panels are cheaper than closeboard or composite
• Post type—concrete costs more upfront but lasts
• Access and ground conditions—tricky sites take longer
• Extras—old fence removal (roughly £4.50 per metre), waste disposal, gates and gravel boards

A quick word on value: the cheapest option upfront isn’t always the cheapest over ten years. A fence that survives one bad winter and needs replacing is a false economy.

Common mistakes to avoid

A few classics we see time and again:

• Skimping on posts. Weak or poorly spaced posts are the number one reason fences fail early.
• Ignoring wind load. A solid fence in an exposed spot needs proper support—or it’ll test its luck in the next gale.
• Forgetting gravel boards. These stop the base of timber panels sitting in damp soil and rotting from the ground up.
• Choosing looks over suitability. That stunning fence you saw online might not suit your property, your budget or your boundary at all.

Frequently asked questions

What type of garden fencing is best for privacy in the UK?
Closeboard (feather edge) fencing is generally the best for privacy. Its overlapping vertical boards leave no gaps, giving a completely solid barrier at a standard 6ft height. Slatted fencing with tightly spaced boards, or a solid panel with a trellis topper, are strong alternatives.

What type of garden fencing is best for security?
Solid, well-built closeboard fencing with timber posts and a locked, tight-fitting gate offers the best everyday security for most homes. Keep horizontal rails facing inwards so there’s nothing to climb, and don’t neglect side gates—they’re the most common weak point.

What type of garden fencing is best for kerb appeal at the front?
For front boundaries, lower decorative options work best—think picket fencing for traditional homes or clean horizontal slats for modern ones. Remember that fences next to a highway are usually limited to 1m without planning permission.

How tall should a privacy fence be for a typical UK garden?
Most rear and side garden fences can reach up to 2m without planning permission, and 1.8m is a popular privacy height. Always double-check local rules, especially in conservation areas or if your fence borders a road.

What affects fence installation cost the most?
Materials, length and height are the biggest factors, followed by post type, site access and any extras like old fence removal or new gates. Difficult ground conditions and city locations can also nudge the price higher.

Is slatted fencing private enough, or will my neighbours still see in?
It depends entirely on the slat spacing and angle. Tightly spaced or angled slats can give near-full privacy while still letting light through, but wider gaps will leave sightlines open. It’s worth being specific about this when you order.

What’s the most secure gate setup for a side passage?
The most secure side-passage gate is a solid, full-height gate that matches the fence, hung on strong timber posts with a mortice deadlock or heavy-duty bolt. Fit it so it sits tight against the fence line with no footholds, and add hinge bolts to stop it being lifted off. Side passages are the most common break-in point, so it’s worth doing properly.

How do I make my fence last longer in British weather?
Choose pressure-treated timber, fit concrete gravel boards to keep the base out of the damp, use sturdy posts, and re-treat or re-stain timber every few years. Good installation does most of the heavy lifting here.
